Pérez sacks Pellegrini – “Mourinho will be coach”
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has confirmed the dismissal of Manuel Pellegrini, and the imminent arrival of José Mourinho.
The move comes after an emergency board meeting held at 17:30 today at the Bernabéu.
Just hours after Mourinho declared himself “free” from Inter Milan, Pérez announced that the Chilean will leave the Bernabéu after just one year.
“In recent weeks, we have been discussing the last few months of the team.
“We have decided to dismiss Manuel Pellegrini as coach of the club, and will hire José Mourinho when his contract situation with Inter is clarified.
“It is not an easy decision that we have taken, but we are convinced that after this year we need new momentum.”
Pellegrini’s sacking comes after a record-breaking year for the club. After spending over €260m on the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká and Karim Benzema, they amassed an incredible 96 points in the league, scoring 102 goals in the process. Unfortunately for Pellegrini it wasn’t enough to overthrow eventual champions Barcelona, and the writing was on the wall for the Chilean after the humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of third division Alcorcón in the Copa del Rey, and their 6th-consecutive Champions League First-Round elimination by French side Lyon.
Of their new coach, Los Blanco’s president said: “We believe that he can do many things, and he will be a good coach for Real Madrid.
“We want to go for one of the best coaches in the world, and we believe this is the right time to do so.
“He fights constantly for excellence, and that is what we seek. Also, he is the only one that has been able to stop Pep Guardiola.”
It is believed that Mourinho has a €16m release clause in his contract.
